With a terrain that varies from hilly to undulating to downright flat, the State of Texas extends from sea level at the Gulf of Mexico to over 8,000 feet in the Guadalupe Mountains of far West Texas and from the semitropical Lower Rio Grande Valley to the High Plains of the panhandle.
Texas is the second largest state in the United States and consists of 261,797 square miles of land and 6,784 square miles of water, the 9th wettest state. It was admitted to the Union as the 28th state on December 29, 1845. Texas is 790 miles long and 660 miles wide at its most distant points.
Texas is bordered by New Mexico, Oklahoma and Arkansas to the north. On the west Texas is bordered by New Mexico and shares an international border with Mexico. To the south, Texas borders Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico. The irregular shape of Texas means that it shares its eastern borders with Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
It has seven (7) region, the Big Bend, Hill County, Gulf Coast, Panhandle Plains, Piney Woods, Prairies and Lakes, South Texas Plains and more than 400 cities. It is more popularly known as the Lone Star State.
Texas comes from the word "teysha" meaning "hello friend" in the language of the Caddo Indian tribes. Spanish explorers and settlers used this word to refer to the friendly tribes throughout Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. It is understandable that the state’s motto is “Friendship.”
Agriculture plays a large role in the economy, as Texas boasts more farmland than any other state. Texas ranks first in the country in the number of cattle raised. Texas raises more sheep and produces more mohair from angora goats than any other state.
Texas is a leading manufacturing state and rank first in the manufacture of computers and electronic equipment (computers, electronic components, military communication systems).
It is also a leading petroleum producing state and engineering firms that service oil and natural gas companies are the source of a great deal of its income. The state is responsible for about 1/5 of the country's oil production and almost 1/3 of the nation's supply of natural gas. Texas is also a leader in the production of cement, crushed stone, lime, salt and sand and gravel. Fittingly, Texas also boasts the largest of all the state capitol buildings, constructed of 15,000 carloads of pink granite.
The state is also home to former Presidents Dwight Eisenhower; Lyndon Baines Johnson; the most bemedalled soldier in world history, Audie Murphy; the first female multi-event athlete Babe Zaharias and to father and son Presidents, George H and George W. Bush.
The state is too enormous that it has a variety of tourist spots and crowd pullers that suit the tastes of everyone, from the outdoor lovers, the Gulf Coast resort area and numerous state parks; the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston for the technology freaks, while history buffs will want to visit the Alamo in San Antonio and the state capital in Austin. And, of course, there are plenty of chances to relish a chuck wagon breakfast beside a colorful canyon and visit exciting old frontiers forts, rodeo watching, dance the night away to the strains of the fiddle or the jukebox and you and barbecue eating to satisfy any Texan, whether a native or a newcomer.
With so many superlatives attached to it, it is obvious that it has one, if not the best quality of life among the states. In fact, it is the fourth most affordable state in the country and the housing prices alone—including apartments for rent—rank 20% below the national average.
To those who savor nature’s untamed beauty, the rugged grandeur of the mountain, the golden sunsets stretching across a seemingly endless horizon and the rustic atmosphere and fascinating landscapes then there is no better place to look for and call home.
